“I Only Drink on Weekends” – But Here’s What That Can Actually Look Like

We tell ourselves it’s fine.  “I only drink on weekends.”  As if that makes it all feel a bit more balanced. A bit more… in control.

And hey, maybe during the week it does feel in control – until Friday rolls around, and the first drink hits fast. Saturday follows suit, and by Sunday night, it’s become a ritual to pour something “to relax before the chaos of the week starts again.”

It doesn’t look like a problem – but it can feel like one.

You wake up Monday flat, scattered, annoyed at yourself for overdoing it again. The cycle repeats, but it’s hard to break because technically, you’re not drinking every day… right?

Here’s where mindful drinking comes in.

It’s not about quitting overnight or white knuckling your way through. It’s about actually checking in with yourself. Asking:

  • Do I like how this feels?
  • Am I drinking out of habit, or because I really want to?
  • Is this how I want my weekend to look – and more importantly, how I want to feel on Monday?

If your weekends feel a bit messy or just a little out of sync with what you want – try this:

Start tracking. Not just for one night, but for a full month (at least).
Give yourself the chance to actually see what’s going on, without judgement.

Don’t just count the drinks.
Notice how you’re feeling before and after.

How were you feeling when you reached for that first one – tired? Socially anxious? Ready to celebrate? And what about afterwards – did it take the edge off, or did it tip into something else?

Use the Mind The Sip Calendar to set drink intentions before the weekend kicks off.
Choose how many drinks you feel good about, and how you want to feel the next morning. Then log what actually happened. No shame – just data. Add a daily note in the journal entry about your energy, your sleep, your mood. This is where the real insights live.

You’ll start to spot patterns. Maybe that second or third drink always leads to foggy sleep. It could be the speed that you’re consuming jumps out at you, or maybe you notice you feel your best when you skip Sunday night drinks altogether.

You might be surprised by what shows up – and how quickly a few small shifts can make a big difference.

This isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being present. And learning to trust yourself a little more, one weekend at a time.
