We often tell ourselves we’ve earned it.
After a long day, or a stretch of pushing through work, responsibilities, and everything in between, that drink can feel like a justified reward. A small moment of transition. A way to finally switch off.
“I deserve this.”
It is a phrase we use without much thought, but it is worth gently questioning, especially when we start looking at our habits through the lens of mindful drinking or a sober curious lifestyle.
Because what are we actually saying we deserve?
Is it the drink itself, the routine around it, or the feeling we associate with it like rest, relief, comfort, or escape?
Most of the time, it is not the alcohol we are really wanting. It is the experience we hope it brings. A pause, a reset, a moment that feels like ours again after a long or stressful day.
But this is where the illusion begins.
That drink we label as a reward can sometimes take away what we were hoping to gain.
You want to relax, but your sleep is disrupted and you wake up tired. You want clarity, but your mind feels foggy the next day. You want to feel restored, but instead you feel drained, flat, or emotionally off balance. You want to unwind, but end up recovering instead.
Still, the pattern continues. Not because we are unaware, but because it has become familiar. A default habit connected to coping, celebrating, unwinding, and social connection.
And this is often the point where mindful drinking starts to become relevant.
Not as a rule or restriction, but as a way of noticing what is actually happening.
When people begin exploring a sober curious mindset, they are not necessarily trying to quit alcohol completely. They are simply starting to question whether the habits they have still support how they want to feel.
Why do I reach for this automatically?
Does this actually help me rest?
Or does it just delay how I feel until tomorrow?
There is no blame in these questions. Only awareness.
Because if alcohol truly supports you in those moments, that is one thing. But if it is something you reach for without thinking, or something that regularly leaves you feeling worse afterward, then it becomes worth pausing.
What am I actually needing right now?
Is it rest? Is it stillness? Is it a sense of reward that does not come with a cost the next day?
Real rest does not take away from you later. It restores you. It leaves you feeling more like yourself, not less.
So the next time you hear yourself think, “I deserve this,” try giving yourself a small pause before you act on it.
You may still choose the drink. You may choose something else instead.
Either way, the difference is awareness.
And in mindful drinking, that small shift from autopilot to intention is often where everything starts to change.
