We tell ourselves we’ve earned it.
After a long day, or a stretch of pushing through work, commitments, responsibilities, and everything in between, that drink can feel like a well-earned reward. A marker of transition. A little signal that it’s finally time to switch off.
“I deserve this.”
It’s something we say without thinking. But it’s worth taking a closer look.
Because what exactly are we saying we deserve?
Is it the taste?
The ritual?
The feeling of relief that comes with it?
Most of the time, we’re not craving the drink itself. We’re craving what we hope it will deliver. Rest. Escape. Comfort. A sense of release. A moment to feel like ourselves again.
But here’s the quiet truth.
That drink we’re calling a reward?
It can often steal the very thing we’re trying to give ourselves.
You wanted to relax, but your sleep is disturbed and you wake up tired.
You wanted clarity, but now your thoughts are foggy.
You wanted to feel good, but the next day you’re flat or irritable or off your game.
You wanted to unwind, but now you’re recovering.
And still, we go back to it. Because that’s what we’ve been taught.
To cope, to celebrate, to unwind, to reconnect — we drink.
It’s the default. The shortcut. The habit that looks harmless on the surface.
This isn’t about guilt or getting it perfect. It’s about being honest with ourselves.
If the drink is truly bringing you what you need — comfort, connection, joy — that’s one thing. But if it’s become something you reach for automatically, or if it’s leaving you feeling worse instead of better, maybe it’s time to ask a different question.
What am I actually craving right now?
Is it rest?
Stillness?
A sense of reward that doesn’t unravel the next day?
Real rewards don’t chip away at your energy, your mood, or your self-trust. They restore you. They add something back in.
So the next time you hear yourself say “I deserve this,” try pausing for a second.
You might still choose the drink.
You might choose something else.
Either way, you’re checking in with yourself.
And that pause, that tiny moment of awareness, is where everything starts to shift.
