Why the Change in Weather Can Stir Up the Urge to Drink

Whether it’s the celebratory feel of sunshine and socialising, or the comfort-seeking that winter often brings, these seasonal shifts can quietly fuel the desire to drink more. Often without us even realising it. So what can you do when the seasons change and cravings creep in?

In this article.

There’s something about a change in seasons that makes us reflect, reset, and sometimes, reach for a drink.

In the Northern Hemisphere, summer’s arriving. Longer days, outdoor events, rosé in the sun, beers by the BBQ. In the Southern Hemisphere, it’s the opposite. Cool weather’s setting in, cozy nights, red wine by the fire, mulled wine season. Different climates, same cravings.

And they can hit hard.

Whether it’s the celebratory feel of sunshine and socialising, or the comfort-seeking that winter often brings, these seasonal shifts can quietly fuel the desire to drink more. Often without us even realising it.

So what can you do when the seasons change and cravings creep in?

Start with awareness
Cravings often aren’t about the alcohol itself. They’re about the mood, the moment, or the meaning we’ve attached to it. A drink on a warm day might feel like freedom or fun. A drink on a cold night might feel like comfort or connection. The drink is just the shortcut.

Interrupt the autopilot
Cravings love routine. If your brain is used to wine on a sunny Sunday or a glass of red when the rain rolls in, it will absolutely nudge you in that direction. The key is to pause and ask:
What am I actually craving here?
Is it the drink or the feeling I associate with it?

Choose how you want to feel
Cravings can’t always be eliminated, but they can be redirected. If what you’re really craving is a mood shift, a break, a reward, a wind-down, or a moment of celebration, there are other ways to get there. Try swapping the drink for a walk, a ritual, a chat, a playlist, a good book, or your favourite alcohol-free alternative. Bonus points for building a new seasonal habit that actually feels good.

Let the season support you
Spring and summer can be a great time to start fresh routines and show up for yourself in new ways. Autumn and winter are perfect for slowing down, reflecting, and getting cozy without using booze as the cushion. There’s power in deciding how you want to feel through the season, instead of reacting to it.

So whether you’re peeling off layers or piling them on, keep checking in. Cravings don’t mean you’re going backwards. They’re just signals. And you get to choose what you do with them.
