How to Handle the 5pm Wobble

You know the one. That feeling that hits late afternoon / early evening, maybe after a full-on day, or when the house finally goes quiet. It’s not quite dinner time, but it’s definitely wine o’clock… or so your brain says.

This is what I call the “Wine Time” Wobble. That little window of time where motivation dips, energy is low, and the urge to pour a drink creeps in.

It’s one of the most common moments people in our community struggle with, and also one of the most powerful places to pause and make a new choice.

So, what’s really going on?

It’s not just about alcohol.
That wobble is often your body asking for something else: a break, some food, a shift in pace, or even just a moment to decompress. But because we’re creatures of habit, our brain jumps to what we’ve always done, and for a lot of us, that was a drink.

Here’s what can help.

Create a circuit-breaker routine. Before the autopilot kicks in, try something small to interrupt the pattern. Open a window. Change rooms. Wash your face. Go for a walk around the block. Even 2–3 minutes of doing something else can be enough to shake up the habit loop.

Eat something nourishing. So many cravings are actually hunger in disguise. Grab a snack with protein or healthy fats, a handful of nuts, some cheese and crackers, a smoothie. You’ll be amazed at how much better you feel once your blood sugar levels out.

Switch up your drink. Have something prepped and ready to go, a cold AF sparkling option, a herbal tea, or even a mocktail in your favourite glass. Half the time we’re craving the ritual, not the alcohol itself.

Acknowledge the moment. Say it out loud: This is the wobble. I see you. Naming it helps you move through it with awareness instead of falling into old patterns. You’re not failing, you’re navigating something really normal and human.

Move your body. Not a full workout, unless you want to! Just stretch, shake your arms out, take a few deep breaths, or dance in your kitchen. Movement shifts energy and gives your nervous system a reset.

Reach out or reflect. Message a friend, post in the MTS private community, or grab a journal and ask yourself: What am I feeling right now? What do I really need? You’d be surprised how quickly the wobble softens when you respond to what’s underneath it.

Final thought
The wine time wobble isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s a sign that your mind and body are adjusting. That’s growth. That’s healing.

And the more often you meet that moment with compassion and intention, the stronger your alcohol-free muscles become.

You don’t have to white-knuckle your way through it. You just have to stay with yourself.

You’ve got this.
